become Gurian Institute model school
The Examiner news (Houston, TX) 11-12-04 Kathy Stevens, director of training at the Gurian Institute in Colorado Springs, Colo. will visit The Regis School of the Sacred Heart Nov. 15-16 to work with teachers and parents to refine techniques tailored to boys’ learning needs developed by noted social philosopher and educator Michael Gurian. The visit is part of an on-going effort which the all-boys school began in 2003 to implement an approach to boy-specific learning instituted by Gurian based on research into the neuro-chemical differences between boys and girls. As a result, all of the faculty and staff of the Regis School have been trained in “how boys learn.” Anne Storey Carty, Regis headmistress and certified Gurian trainer, has expressed excitement that the school is in the process of becoming a “Gurian Institute model school.” In his books “The Wonder of Boys,” “The Wonder of Girls” and “Boys and Girls Learn Differently,” Gurian describes how differences between boys and girls with respect to attention span, spatial relationships, and reasoning can impact education. Learning from Gurian that boys benefit from physical activity and movement to stimulate mental function and help focus attention, the Regis school began incorporating physical activity breaks into the curriculum. Gurian, who visited the school in November 2003, has commented that “Regis is doing an exceptional job teaching boys through the movement and hands-on activities that boys need in order to enhance their learning.”
