Dr. Lisa Basista
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
Dr. Lisa Basista is a lifelong California educator with over 29 years in the K-12 classroom. She has served as an elementary Bilingual Resource Teacher, high school Spanish and ELD instructor, Director of International Student Services, Middle School Assistant Principal, and district and county SDAIE, BTSA, CLAD, and CTEL trainer. She has also worked as an online adjunct professor for several teacher credentialing programs. Currently, she is the Dean of Academics at the Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad, California, the first female to hold that honor in the school’s 106 year history!
The Army and Navy Academy is an all-male, college preparatory military academy that focuses on educating, mentoring, and developing good character and leadership in young men. It is also a Gurian Model School, an initiative that Dr. Basista is proud to have brought to the site.
While a student, Dr. Basista spent several years living and studying abroad- first as an A.F.S. exchange student to Tucuman, Argentina (high school), and later, with the Junior Year Abroad program to Mexico City, Mexico. These experiences led to immense enthusiasm for second language acquisition and bilingual/bicultural understanding. Her doctoral research focused on the transitional experience of high school-aged Chinese students in an American boarding school setting. It was during that research that Dr. Basista first discovered the significant impact that single gender differences had on boys and learning.
Dr. Basista’s goal as an educator is to collaboratively develop a learning community where students have the opportunity to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
