Peggy Daniels - Master Trainer
E-mail: pdaniels@cdschool.org

Since 1973, I have enjoyed teaching Spanish, language arts, and social studies in both public and independent schools in North Carolina.  More recently I have been the Middle School Principal at Carolina Day.  I hold a BS degree in education and a graduate degree in school administration from Western Carolina University.

In addition to exploring a greater understanding of the ways in which young people learn differently, my educational interests have been enriched through a study of integrated, thematic instruction at the middle-school level and through the establishment of a strong character education and community service program at Carolina Day.

In the fall of 2004, Carolina Day School implemented single-gender academic classes in our sixth grade, and we will add seventh grade in 2005. We were delighted to have Kathy Stevens come to Asheville in the spring of 2004 to train our 5th-8th grade teachers prior to our implementation of single-gender classes. Then last summer, Claudia and I were fortunate to attend the Gurian Institute.

As we worked through the trainer certification process, we set a goal for ourselves and our school. We are striving to support and encourage our teachers so that Carolina Day School's Lower School, in a coed setting, demonstrates best practices to support the brain-based gender differences of our students, and our Middle School demonstrates the same in a single-gender academic setting.

Carolina Day School is a Gurian Institute Model School.
