Desha Bierbaum is a principal at Wamsley Elementary School in Rifle, Colorado. She has a Master’s of Arts degree in Curriculum and Instruction, with an emphasis on educational technology from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA.

Desha began her career in Arkansas teaching a first/second split in a private school for three years. She then taught 7 years in a public school in third, fifth and sixth grades. Desha’s family then moved to Washington State where she taught fifth grade for two years. Seven years ago the family moved to Glenwood Springs, Colorado, where Desha grew up. She has taught fifth and third grades as well as serving two years as a vice-principal and three years as a principal.

Wamsley Elementary has been working with the Gurian Institute for about 2 years. Desha’s staff has participated in on-site training; book studies with Kelley King and the entire staff attended the Summer Institute. Wamsley Elementary strives daily to create an environment conducive to learning for their boys and girls. They are beginning to see great success, especially with their ELL population.

Desha wanted to become a trainer to help others become the very best educators they can be by meeting the needs of their boys and girls more effectively through the use of the Gurian Institute’s strategies. Desha believes that educators must learn to work smarter, not harder, and hopes to help educators learn to use these strategies in tandem rather than as an add on.
