Cari Whicker has been a teacher for 11 years.  The first year was spent in a small town elementary school in rural Indiana.  Currently she is employed at Riverview Middle School in Huntington, Indiana. While the majority of her day is spent teaching sixth grade language arts, she also teaches social studies.

Several years ago, Cari was approached by her middle school principal to study the concept of single-gender classes.  The school corporation was noting a large gap in the language arts data between the boy and girl students.

After a year of reading and research, Cari and a colleague piloted single-gender classes within their public co-ed school. The single-gender classes have been such a success in their building,  the program has been expanded and now includes 16 single-sex classes.  Teachers have been thrilled with the opportunity to best meet students’ needs.  The children are excited to be in classes in which they feel comfortable and are finding great success.  Finally, the parents are actively interested in the single-gender program and ask that their children be placed in such a program.

It was with great excitement that Cari attended the Gurian Summer Institute in Colorado Springs.  She looks forward to sharing with others the brain research in support of single-gender education, as well as strategies and techniques to be used in the classroom.

Cari lives in Indiana with her husband of 14 years.  She has three children,  two boys and a girl.
