Barbara Day, Ed.D. - Certified Trainer Born and raised in Chicago, Dr. Day began her teaching career as a teenager working as a camp counselor at a camp for the disabled. After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in education, she immediately attended graduate school at the University of Kansas and earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education. As a Special Education teacher in Kansas she worked in both urban and rural school systems for seven years. After moving to southern Texas, she became the principal of a high school for students with disabilities. Later she worked as the Principal of a middle school in Austin which received the Distinguished Texas Mentor Middle School Award from the Governor. After receiving her Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Texas, she became the Assistant Director of the Pikes Peak Board of Cooperative Educational Services in Colorado Springs where she developed an alternative high school and was the Director of all Title Programs for member districts. Three years later, she became the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for one of the larger school districts in the Pikes Peak Region. She remained in that position for eight rewarding years. Barbara relocated when her husband accepted a Superintendent’s position in the Phoenix area. She began work with a not-for-profit company that developed on-line curriculum, provided services for expelled students, and owned a Charter School for At-Risk Youth where she was the School Superintendent. Dr. Day and her husband returned to Colorado Springs a few years later. She accepted a position as the Executive Director of Special Education for School District 11. Two years later, responsibility for pre-school, adult education, gifted education and English language learners was added to her responsibilities. She retired from District 11 in December, 2010, and now works as a consultant. Dr. Day is the mother of two married sons and the grandmother to a precious one year old grandson. She looks forward to a working retirement where she can pursue her passion for education. |
